Consolidation and fragmentation: the professional ideals of Swedish journalists

Jenny Wiik (Gothenburg University, Sweden)

Is journalism going through a process of deprofessionalisation or is it just entering a new phase – taking a different shape? And what is the meaning of professional ideals such as objectivity, neutrality and autonomy in these processes? The paper aims at analyzing these issues, focusing on the case of Swedish journalists. Empirical evidence is drawn from a national survey conducted five times since 1989. The main conclusion is that journalism is not deprofessionalizing, but going through a reformation. Traditional journalistic ideals have attained increasing support over time and efforts to maintain professional boundaries are fierce.
