Muktapeeth – a story of citizen journalism in the Indian context

Gloria Khamkar (University of Pune, India): Muktapeeth – a story of citizen journalism in the Indian context

The state of the Indian media has been relatively bleak in the last few years. The country has only a few prominent media houses that not only influence the news but are also monitored by either big corporate houses or political parties. These mainstream media rarely address critical or socially relevant news, and do not cover regional issues extensively. Under pressure from higher authorities, stories are occasionally prevented from publication at the very last moment. However, the possibilities of participatory journalism in India may improve this situation. This paper examines Muktapeeth, a newspaper supplement devoted to citizen journalism.
